The Kite Runner

Baba and Amir are now living in California, where they are starting to get into the normal routine of life for Americans. Baba found a job working at the local gas station. Life is about to change for Amir because he will soon be graduation from high school, and then moving onto college. For Amir's graduation present, his father gave him a "new" car, a Ford Grand Torino. I drive a car that was made in the year 2000, and that is considered to be old for me, so just imagine what Amir's "new car" looks like. Baba wants Amir to go to college to have a successful career, and Amir feels that he can be successful by becoming a writer, but Baba doesn't approve of his aspirations. Baba and Amir soon decide to purchase a van, which will help them carry around all of their supplies that they will need in order to sell things at the local market. While at the market, Baba is introduced to man who is known as General Taheri. He has a daughter named Soraya. Amir and Soraya make eye contact, which I hope will become more serious than just a glance at each other.

Amir finally gets enough nerve to go and talk to Soraya. While talking to Soraya, Amir meets her sweet mother, Jamila. He realizes that he needs to respect the General, but he wants to talk to Soraya so he only talks to her when he is away. I can relate to what he is feeling because my dad was just like that when I started dating. He was very strict because he wanted the best for me. But eventually Amir has to face his fear by talking to Soraya’s father. He tells him to stay away; if he knows what’s best for him.  Amir has been noticing that Baba is starting to cough up blood a lot, so he takes him to the doctor, after having to convince his father. The doctor tells them that Baba has been suffering and will suffer from lung cancer. Amir get’s really scared finding out this news and doesn’t know what he will do without his Baba. Losing a parent is like losing part of your life. Amir probablyl would feel lost without his Baba around. Baba’s cancer is getting worse, to the point where he can’t move because the cancer has reached his brain. The General, Jamila, and Soraya come and visit Baba in the hospital. I couldn’t imagine what it would feel like for Amir. He is in a total different environment from when he was a child, with barely any friends or connections, so he has no one to turn to. But, Baba realizes that there is one thing that will help Amir survive after he passes on. Baba called up the General a few days later to ask the request of his daughter and Amir’s marriage.  Soraya’s parents accept! But Soraya only wanted to get married on one question. She had to tell Amir who she really was. When she was eighteen she was mad at her father so she ran off with an Afghan man, where they did things that she would regret for the rest of her life. She told Amir that her mother was so worried for her that she had a heart attack. That made her realize that what she was doing was not right. Luckily, Amir didn’t care about any of this; he was still terribly in love with her.Finding that type of love that Amir expressed towards his future wife can be a rare thing in todays world. Finding someone that is willing to admit that they did something wrong will show what type of person they are.

The wedding plans move quickly because Baba is becoming more and more each day. They have the traditional wedding with a black tux and white wedding dress, and have a reception to follow at a banquet hall. Baba paid for a lot of expenses for the wedding. Without the money he gave them, they wouldn’t have been able to have the wedding they had dreamed of. I hope that someday my wedding is everything I hope it to be. I want my closest friends and family to attend. I bet that was such a great day for Amir because he knew that he wasn’t going to live the rest of his life alone. Shortly after, Baba passes on. Many people that Baba helped during his lifetime showed up to pay their respects. In 1988, Amir finally finishes his first novel. Life is going swell for Amir and Soraya because they are trying to have a baby; unfortunately they soon find out that they are unable to have a baby. After awhile, Amir finishes his second novel, and they move to San Francisco. Amir is starting to realize why his father treated him the way he did, so that he would be become a real man.

It is now 2001, Amir just got a call from Rahim Khan and he wants him to come see him in Pakistan. Amir starts to think about his childhood. He realizes that Rahim Khan hasn’t seen him since he was little, so he wonders what he is like. He tells Soraya that he has to go see Rahim Khan. Not having a baby is starting to affect their relationship because now they are just doing things for each other because they have to. That would be so hard on someone’s relationship if you couldn’t have children because that is usually part of marriage.

Amir gets to Peshawar .The taxi driver tells Amir that things are not how they used to be since the Taliban have taken over. He finally gets to Rahim Khan’s apartment. He looks very skinny and ill. He finds out that he has been living in Baba’s house since he left. Just like Baba, Rahim Khan starts coughing up blood and he said he is not expecting to live much longer. Amir wants to tell him about what he witnessed with Hassan before he asks him to show him his house that he grew up in.

Khaled Hosseini is doing a good job of keeping me interested throughout this book. There is always something going on. I think that as time goes on Amir is going to realize why his father treated him the way he did in order to make his life better. I also think that it is going to be really hard for Amir to go back to house to see how much it has changed. I have lived in the same house my whole life, so if I were to come to it after ten or so years, it would bring back so many memories for me. The story is starting to get really intense ever since Amir has returned to his home country. It is going to be really hard for him to see how things have changed since the Taliban have taken over.

Summary is a little too much. Make sure that your reflections are the focus.
